Does Your Web Site Copy Sell?
By: John Skorczewski
Hello,
First off, let me just say that if you've sent me an email within the last couple of weeks and I haven't responded, let me apologize. We're moving into new offices. Like most moves, this one's a mess and I'm way behind on email. I will respond as soon as I can, I promise!
Last Week I gave you a free copy of my new eBook "Bump Your Way To Internet Riches". Thanks to all of you who sent kind words on the book, I'm glad you liked it!
This week I want to talk to you about writing good copy and advertisements. I've also got a freebie that goes along with this that you'll get a kick out of....(Hint: it's really unconventional!)
Let's face it...your success online has a lot to do with how well you write your web site's copy. Is it compelling? Does it paint a picture of your product in the reader's mind? Does it compel them to purchase?
If you answered "no" to any of those questions, you're dead in the water.
That's why it's so important to learn how to write good copy. Sure you could hire someone to write your copy for you....but a good copywriter will charge thousands of dollars (and rightly so!).
It's much better (in the long run) to become the copywriter for your company yourself. There are a few ways to go about this...and most of them cost money (from a little money to a lot of money).
You could start by reading the established masterpiece books out there like that Robert Collier Letter Book (which I HIGHLY Recommend). Or you can attend
expensive seminars on the subject...
There's another way too...and that's to study successful copy (and that's where the freebie I mentioned earlier comes in).
You may remember the J Peterman Company from Seinfeld...most people don't realize it, but that's a real company and they
put out an amazing mail order catalog. It's 50 pages long and each item they sell has a long copy description of it and an artistic
drawing of the item (they don't even use real photographs of the items...they sell with the words!).
You can get a free copy of this 50 page catalog by sending them an email at their web site, or calling them.
You can find them at JPeterman.com
I suggest you get their free catalog and devour it. Read it cover to cover and then do it again. See how they craft their
copy...see how it sucks you in, paints a picture in your mind and compels you to want to buy the item. Can you use
the same copywriting techniques on your web site?
And get in the habit of reading ads and copy...I keep a file of good ads. When I see one somewhere, I clip it out and
stick it in a file...then when I'm writing an ad or some web site copy and I need inspiration, I head over to my "swipe file".
That's all for this week. See you next Monday!
